Tips for managing through seasons of anxiety and high stress
Tech sentiment is at an all time low with layoffs, attrition, negative news flow
Anxiety for folks working in the technology sector over the last few weeks has been at an all time high, with unprecedented layoffs, a crypto black swan meltdown, a difficult fundraising environment, and much more. Here are 3 strategies to consider to get through these tough times:
1/ Allow space for your negative thoughts (e.g the world is falling for these reasons), but also remember to practice optimism (e.g. here are the positives that are still going on in my life, despite the world falling). The second piece is particularly important to practice with intentionally, as it builds resilience. Resilience is key, because we may be in a tough macro environment for some time. Building resilience will help with regards to sustaining through the difficult times, and to empower oneself to figure out and achieve the next goal. There are always positives, consider writing them down!
2/ Break things down into smaller goals within your control, and focus on accomplishing 3 things per day (max). It can be easy to get into a cycle of negativity where the world is falling, and it becomes difficult to do anything. During tough days, the thing on your to-do list may be to take a walk, or make a cup of coffee. During better days, the things on your to-do list may be polishing up your resume, interviewing, or calling an investor to give a difficult update.
3/ Reach out and extend an offer to help others, or ask people how they are doing. There are many currently struggling, and the act of service, in particular during tough seasons, can help folks feel less alone, and helping others can lead to joy, even during times of pain.
These are some of the strategies that have worked for me through seasons of situational depression and anxiety, but I welcome any other strategies or tactics that others have used to get through the inevitable tough times!
